| Gary's approach to psychotherapy originates both in experiential and depth psychology; using analytical and archetypal foundations for growth and change. Experiential therapy (not to be confused with experimental therapy) is an approach to psychotherapy that balances theory with action, or put another way, it combines the human connection between therapist and client with knowledge and experience. A good experiential therapist is emotionally present with their clients and use, among others things, this human connection and relationship with clients as a catalyst for deep revelation, insight, and change. The emotional intensity of the therapeutic relationship allows the re- experiencing of past and current emotions. Once these emotions are present the therapist can help guide the client through processing them in a way that brings relief and change in their life. Our overall goal is to release and free ourselves from these emotions, no longer allowing them to play themselves out in our relationships, careers, physical health, etc. Adult Individual Psychotherapy: Through an understanding of past experiences, unconscious drives, archetypal themes, self-defeating beliefs and behaviors we can begin to construct a healthy balance in life. Child Therapy: While a similar approach to child and adolescent psychotherapy is used, as with adults, a heavier influence on altering thinking and feeling is used in changing behavior and increasing self- esteem; this is primarily accomplished through expressive, art, and other types of play therapy. Play therapy is generally employed with children ages 3 to 11, and provides a way for children to express their experiences and feelings through a natural, non-intrusive, healing process. As children’s experiences and knowledges are often communicated through play, it becomes an important vehicle for them know and accept themselves and others. Adolescent Therapy: Working with adolescents requires a different approach and set of rules all-together. Building rapport and gaining trust are the most crucial elements, without which therapy is virtually useless, if not harmful. Whether the issues are pertaining to depression, trauma, anger, or acting-out the approach is the same. Helping a teen uncover his/her sense of self, find their voice, and a means of appropriately communicating that voice can offer relief not only for teens, but for the entire family as well. Couples/Relationship Therapy: Gary implores a wide rage of communication building and language altering techniques with couples to help guide them through rough transitions and towards restructuring their relationship. The relationship involved may be between members of a family, couples, employees or employers in a workplace, or between a professional and a client, etc. .Learn more about Relationship Therapy here. |
