Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Categories[edit]

Hi, I saw you adding categories to File:Rajinikanth 2010 - still 113555 crop.jpg. Those are not necessary because the image is already in Category:Rajinikanth, which already includes those categories (or at least those that are not top-level categories, which should not be used for an image anyway). Please see COM:OVERCAT for why I reverted you. You are adding categories that are parent categories of categories already included. This clutters the page. Please don't add all categories you can come up with to pages. Hekerui (talk) 12:48, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

You claim to have taken yourself the following images: File:Jayalalitha Early Star.JPG, File:Ilayaraaja the Maestro.jpg, File:Kamal with sivaji.jpg and more. Hi everyone. I uploaded this image since I saw these available in Wiki Commons and it looked very clear these images was taken by an individual (probably by self Camera) & he added it. So I took myself that it should be free to use & must not have any copyright concerns. This is the only reason on which I added them. Mainly on Actor Vijay image I discussed with User:Sodabottle & he also felt it can be added. But now each of these are questioned for copyright issues I have nothing to do. Re: Image (commons) deletion request placed by you !![edit]

The previous reason for keeping File:Iitm maingate logo.jpg was that India has freedom of panorama, which is irrelevant to the fact that there is no source provided for this image. How can you know that that image and en:File:Nitt.adblock.jpg are the works of their uploaders when you are not either of the uploaders? The usage of an image on none, one or many articles is irrelevant when there is no source provided for the image. --Geniac (talk) 02:04, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have already informed the uploaders, by posting to their talk pages. Yes, citing the reason that an image doesn't have a source stated and deleting it if one isn't provided certainly is "the right way". Whether or not an uploader is presently active is irrelevant. Whether they are of high resolution or not is irrelevant. I did not claim the images have been downloaded from a website. How can you say they "must be" taken by the uploader when you are not the uploader? The deletion process already allows time for a source to be provided. I already have made efforts to get the source from the uploaders, by posting to their talk pages. --Geniac (talk) 04:13, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Help[edit]

Hi Ungal Vettu Pillai, because this Flickr account has hosted copyright violations in the past it takes specific evidence of permission from the author for the image to stay on. This means that you could write a message to the Flickr user and ask him to give you a "Declaration of consent for all enquiries". This is all exlained in detail on Commons:OTRS. Your uploads referring to India : Categorisation[edit]

Hi, please use useful categories and don't over-categorize your images, i.e. please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Category:Udhagamandalam + (= obsolete)

Category:Geography of Udhagamandalam +

Category:Landscapes of Tamil Nadu + (= obsolete as "Geography of U.." = "Landscapes ...")

Category:Mountains of Tamil Nadu (= p.e. non-categorized 'mountains' )

You'll help to save time and capacity on commons by categorizing:

Category:Geography of Udhagamandalam and for example Category:Mountains of Tamil Nadu)

Please use as far as possible the category of the regarding city/town/village or district (if there's no category) etc., or, a localized better 'fitting' i.e. the 'most fitting"' category(ies). Do not add - in addition - the categories of the "parent category", among them cities, states and countries etc.

For further information on categories please read Commons:Categories referring to an accurate categorisation, simplifying your further uploads and categorisation in general. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the commons:help desk.
