Commons talk:Copyright tags/Country-specific tags
Links[edit]
@Aymatth2: Shouldnt this page be linked in the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard - Salgo60 (talk) 16:27, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Salgo60: Good catch. Any idea how to get it linked? Aymatth2 (talk) 16:30, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry no. I normally start upload and click on the page for tags and do a search for Sweden and this time I got no hit ;-)... I come back if I find out how... - Salgo60 (talk)
- @Aymatth2: I added a request on Commons:Upload_Wizard_feedback#New_page:_Country_Specific_Copyright_links "New page: Country Specific Copyright links" - Salgo60 (talk) 16:37, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks - I will also follow up. Ideally the tags page link would point to a translation of the list into the user's language. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:52, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Aymatth2: I am not a user interface person but maybe someone can do it easier. I created a Change request ticket T221524 - Salgo60 (talk) 16:56, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Salgo60: An uploader can get to the list of country-specific tags from Commons:Copyright tags, but not directly from the upload page. The plan is to break out the lists of copyright tags into several sub-pages, so Commons:Copyright tags becomes a sort of overview/index. Possibly the upload wizard should have links to all the sub-pages, e.g. "General PD, By country, GNU, Creative Commons, Other". Alternatively, these links could be given close to the top of the Commons:Copyright tags page. I am not sure what is best. Aymatth2 (talk) 17:26, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

Country or jurisdiction[edit]
"European Union" is not a country, so it's puzzling to find it here. Commons:Copyright tags/General public domain on the other hand contains USA-specific templates. If I find myself having to click multiple links before I guess which subpage might contain the template I'm looking for, go figure a newbie. Nemo 14:31, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
- Making this stuff accessible is a challenge. Some notes:
- The new subpages of Commons:Copyright tags have the same contents as the former sections in the English version. Other language versions do not always put the tags in the same sections.
- "European Union", "Soviet Union", "United Nations" etc. have to go somewhere ...
- Commons:Copyright tags/General public domain holds templates used to show why a non-US work is public domain in the US. These tags do not apply to US works.
- If you know the name of the tag you want, you can just search for it. I have added a search box to the Commons:Copyright tags intro.
- The "Country-specific" page may have too many tags, but should list all the tags like PD-country. The "GNU" and "Creative Commons" pages should also be self-explanatory.
- But it may not be at all obvious what a tag for something like The Open Birds Encyclopedia would be called or where it would be found. I wonder if there should be another index page for "Tags by source", with tags listed there as well as on the subpage for their type? The entry for The Open Birds Encyclopedia would give {{PD-OBE}}, and {{PD-OBE}} would also be listed in General public domain, GNU licenses, whatever. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:40, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Nemo bis: I added a first-cut Commons:Copyright tags/Index by source, but don't know if it works. I also addedCommons:Copyright tags/Commonly used licenses, cloned from the upload wizard. Do you have any suggestions on how else to make it easier for casual uploaders to find the right license tag without reading through a huge and jumbled list? Copyright tags e.g. for Gambia (also posted at Village Pump)[edit]
I find the Commons "copyright tags" by country extremely useful. So thanks to all involved. I recently went to check on the tags for Gambia and was flummoxed because there were none. I did a search and found a document that covers copyright law dated 2004 and decided it was time I created a tag as I had found all the other tags useful. I see there is a clever system for gathering these tags together which I don't understand. So... is there anyone here who could cast an eye over this draft and tell me if it could be published and what is the right way to do it ... or should I be bold and JFDI? Thanks for listening. Please Help me understand[edit]
I am trying to upload a photograph of a book that was published in the UK, the author of which died more than 70 years ago and thus should be in the public domain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Szyk specifically from this book: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szyk_Haggadah
When I try to upload it at the upload wizard there is no option for books printed outside the United States, only various options for books printed in the united states. When I select other (I want to explain that the copyright has certainly expired in the country where it was published) it demands a copyright tag but I cannot work out whcih one. Monaco is missing (see also category PD Monaco license tags). — D’Azur, 14:19, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Template needed for United Kingdom (UK)[edit]
UK author known, copyright expired[edit]
What is the UK template for works such as Captain_Dick_Demi-Solde_on_a_Wild_Goose_Flight_to_the_Swan_River. Clearly, I have used an incorrect template. The author's name is known and the image was published in 1829; MargaretRDonald (talk) 21:55, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
UK Government[edit]
For documents published by the UK's government, law enforcement agencies and freedom of information requests/responses, a template needs to be developed. Template:UK-PD — Preceding unsigned comment added by PaladinOfDaedalus (talk • contribs) 19:09, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
