Video location coordinates not detected upon upload[edit]

The Upload form couldn't get the coordinates from File:Wind on water at 高美濕地.webm, but https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cxinventor.file.explorer could. So I had to copy them in manually from it. Jidanni (talk) 07:47, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WIKI PROFILE PIC[edit]

I have updated the Wiki Profile pic for a client's page. While the Wiki page pic is now updated, I notice that when I do a google search, I still see the old picture associated with WIKI in the search results. I attempted to remove the picture from Commons, where the old picture still exists, but it does not appear to allow me to do that.

Can anyone let me know if there is a way to remove the old pic from continuing to appear associated with Wiki when conducting a google search? Harold Metric (talk) 01:35, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  1. @Harold Metric: the only basis on which it could theoretically be deleted is as a courtesy deletion, and I'd be astounded if one were granted for this purpose.
  2. We have no control over what Google chooses to show. Removal from Commons would not remove it from Google.
  3. Probably Google will eventually pick up the newer photo.
  4. You say, "I have updated the Wiki Profile pic for a client's page." I hope you are familiar with en:WP:COI and have made the appropriate declarations of your conflict of interest on en-wiki. (Not an issue for Commons, and even though I'm an admin there I'm not going to go look, but if you haven't done this I strongly recommend doing so before your account is blocked for failing to do so. - Jmabel ! talk 02:37, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question Regarding the Purpose of Uploading a Work[edit]

I was interested in uploading a photocopied 1978 publication of Capital: Volume IV (Theories of Surplus Value) by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union for the purpose of referencing as a primary source in an elaboration of different editions of the work, but saw that I could only upload works which were my own, or which I was given permission to upload.

Seeing as I am neither Karl Marx nor a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, it seems I cannot upload it, and I am struggling to source it given that it was published in a country which no longer exists. Can I upload it in this scenario, or is there a way for me to make a proper useful citation for the work? I see in plenty of other instances that at least the covers of books are uploaded as images attached to articles, and I'm not sure how a lot of them got permission to upload. By all accounts I would hazard a guess that this sort of work counts as public domain, but I don't know the best way to approach the issue. Thanks. AquaticOnWiki (talk) 01:52, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Russia. I think the original text is PD but any translations into languages other then that would be copyrighted. Especially moderns ones where the author took liberties with the translation and/or added their own annotations. --Adamant1 (talk) 01:59, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the English translation published in 1978 was actually new at that time. Does the 1978 edition have a copyright notice? If so, the present-day Communist Party of Russia is the successor to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union; if the CPSU held the copyright, then the present-day CP still does. On the other hand, if like some CP publications it was without notice, in 1978 that would have put it in the public domain in the U.S.: {{PD-US-1978-89}}. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marwood1103. First, please don't post in ALL CAPTIAL LETTERS because doing so is considered by many to be a form of online shouting/yelling or an expression of anger. Next, files are always deleted/removed for a reason; sometimes it turns out be an incorrect reason, but there's always a reason. Furthermore, there's no record of you uploading any files to Commons with this account. Did you perhaps use a different account to upload the file? Did you perhaps upload the file locally to one of the various language Wikipedias (for example, English Wikipedia)? If you can provide the name of the file that was deleted, then it might be easier for someone to figure out what happened and why. Lastly, it's very unlikely that anyone is going to contact you via email regarding any question yuo ask at a Help Desk like this; so, you shouldn't expect such a thing. Any questions you have will be answered in the discussion thread you started; so, occassionally checking the thread is probably a good idea. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:15, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to preview all images in a category?[edit]

J'ai mis à jour la biographie de Jeanne Duval sur Wikipédia France. Je n'arrive pas à modifier la même fiche sur Wikipédia common. Robert Gangier (talk) 09:04, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

-- Asclepias (talk) 10:12, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably, the same difference as between e.g. Category:Videos of English language and Category:Videos in English, or more generally between Category:Videos of language and Category:Videos by language. As far as I can tell, videos in the "of" categories seem to be about the language, and videos in the "in" categories use the language and are about any subject. For audio files, there are Category:Audio files about language and Category:Audio files by language. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:39, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to type doubled brackets[edit]

Recently on Commons, I have been unable to type doubled brackets when editing the text content of a page directly. When I type a bracket, it appears all OK. But when I type another one after it, instead of the bracket appearing, it changes the previous bracket to some kind of weird symbol. This is preventing me from quickly adding MediaWiki links. I have to type bracket, space, bracket and then delete the space, or copy-paste the doubled brackets from somewhere. This doesn't happen on Wikipedia, it seems like a Commons-only thing. Is this some kind of fancy new-fangled feature, and if so, how can I turn it off? JIP (talk) 13:31, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can you describe what you mean by "editing the text content of a page directly", if different from editing the wikicode in the edit box? Maybe it has to do with something in your user preferences or you might have involuntarily changed your keyboard settings in the edit box (see the small keyboard icon when editing a page). You can also use the buttons below the edit box to add the double brackets around selected text. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:55, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This would definitely be something on your computer/browser, not in the wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 17:34, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean exactly editing the wikicode directly in the edit box. I don't think it's something on my computer/browser, because (1) it's happening both on my home computer and my work computer, which even run different operating systems (the first one runs Linux while the second one runs Windows) and it's only happening on Commons. Editing the wikicode on Wikipedia works OK. Both of them run on the same wiki software. JIP (talk) 19:06, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: So, did you check your keyboard settings as I suggested above? Check that it is on the option "Use native keyboard". Because if it is on the option "International Phonetic Alphabet - X-SAMPA", it does something that looks very much like what you described. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:44, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It appears indeed that I had somehow managed to switch the keyboard input method to "International Phonetic Alphabet". Switching it back to "native keyboard" solved the problem. JIP (talk) 06:32, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

First time trying to upload, unsure what to do[edit]

Greetings to everyone. I have recently been cruising around ww2 british submarines and translating to my local wikipedia and i've come across an article which doesn't have a photo of the vessel. But searching around with google i came across with this and it seems it's one of the very few available pictures of it. But since it's not my work, i'm not sure if there's the option of uploading it somehow under the corresponding license and ofc, crediting the author. But at the same time it's clear that the website it's not the original owner and they reposted it from an author from the time, but they don't say anything on the website regarding the origin or ownership, so more confusion. If someone could shed some light i will be veeeery grateful. Thanks! :D Llapis (talk) 19:05, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Llapis: Hello, The photo is also at the IWM, but it's probably not a photo of the P33, because it's under the title "With the Royal Navy submariners at HMS Forth, the submarine depot ship. 2 to 6 March 1942, HMS Forth, and on board some of her submarines." Maybe the website submarinefamily used it to illustrate the type of submarines, not specifically the P33. If you want to upload the photo anyway, that's probably possible, because Commons already has other Navy photos by the same photographer J H Smith and tagged with the template PD-UKGov. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:26, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I searched the archive and find Mona Lisa is an often-used example here, but I didn't find my answer. On how uploading an image[edit]

Hello, I was wondering if I could take a screenshot of a YouTube video and post it so I could use it on a Wikipedia article I made. An image like I say is something like per example "File:Rahkmonov 2.png". Is this allowed? D1D4K10 (talk) 20:49, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can as long as the original video is licensed appropriately. On YouTube, there is an option to have Creative Commons-licensed videos that can be rehosted, remixed, screengrabbed, etc. here. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:02, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand the license part, it's a bit confusing D1D4K10 (talk) 21:09, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@D1D4K10: A screenshot is a derivative work of the video. So you need that the video has a license accepted on Commons to be allowed to upload a screenshot on Commons. Yes, copyright is complex and confusing. Yann (talk) 21:25, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can take screenshots of that latter video and post them here because the author of the video allows you to copy the entire video if you want, as long as you give attribution to the original. You cannot post screenshots of the former video, as it's protected by copyright. Did you take a look at COMM:LICENSE? Did you have questions about that page? —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:25, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I finally did it, is it ok? "File:Clint Hester.jpg" D1D4K10 (talk) 21:06, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can look on Youtube at the description of the source video of the file you gave as example. At the bottom of the description is indicated the CC license, which is more exactly the license CC BY 3.0. So, unless there's some particular reason to doubt it, it is fine to upload a screenshot from that video to Commons and to tag it with the template "YouTube CC-BY", which refers to the license CC BY 3.0, and to add the template "LicenseReview". However, the uploader tagged that file on Commons with a different license, CC BY-SA 4.0, which is a disputable move. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:34, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@LordBirdWord: Hi, You included that link with the other file, File:Art Olivier 2024 via Email.jpg, so there's apparently no reason for an error message with this file. Maybe you can just try again to add the link. However, you tagged both files with CC0, but there is no evidence anywhere that a CC0 dedication was issued. The message looks more like PD-copyright holder, assuming that the subject is the copyright holder, because at least the email photo does not look like a self-taken portrait. Also, maybe you can add a request for LicenseReview to the pages. I'm not sure if your post on your x account of a copy of an email you received from the subject will be sufficient for license reviewers, but maybe. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:26, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Orthogonal category trees for events and people[edit]

Hello all

I studied graph theory at university so apologies in advance for the technical language. And Wikimedia does support category intersections.

I am currently working on a Wikipedia story (about a climate hunger strike in Berlin as it happens) that makes use of images of events and participants. And frankly, the current category graph is a mess.

I would presume it better to have the events under one category tree and the people under another? And then bring the various images "together" using category intersections? I searched Wikimedia Help for advice on this kind of practice but could not find any policy or guidelines on the matter. Although surely this is a question that does or should arise quite often?

Many thanks in advance for any assistance, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 07:13, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some events are so tied to some person that they would also (or mainly) be categorized under that person, e.g. Category:Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Category:Joe Biden signs the Climate Executive Orders (2021-01-27), but usually events and people come together only at the level of individual photos. Here's one of mine: File:Steve Perry & Efrim Manuel Manuck 01.jpg. Occasionally there may be so many photos of the same person at the same notable event to be worth a category that intersects the two, just to avoid clutter. - Jmabel ! talk 16:16, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Thanks. In some circumstances, my suggestion is clearly not warranted. There are always corner‑cases and other oddities. But here, there are two nice primary branches to overlap: Category:Climate activists from Germany and Category:Hunger strikes in Germany. And with other secondary branches to add that cover concepts like location and similar attributes — although these are sometimes preempted by subcategories. Tx again. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 06:44, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Follow up: Is it possible to display the intersection of two categories? Or must one simply drill down through each hierarchy individually. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 06:45, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I use a photograph made in world war II by a man who is now dead to illustrate what sort of work he made?[edit]

I have found the picture on cnn: https://edition.cnn.com/2015/01/23/world/gallery/auschwitz-liberation/index.html. RuthAMdJ (talk) 10:31, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RuthAMdj, Possibly, but the photo would either need to either never have been eligible for copyright protection or no longer eligible for copyright protection under both the copyright laws of the United States and the copyright law of the country of first publication. So, if you can provide more information about the en:provenance of the photo then it might be easier to figure this out. You should also note that CNN seems to have obtain the photo from en:Getty Images (check the lower right of the photo for the attribution "East News/Getty Images"). CNN might've paid Getty a fee so that it could use the photo or is using it under a claim of en:fair use. This attribution likely means that Getty is claiming or at least trying to claim that the photo is indeed still under copyright protection, and that it either owns the copyright outight or is acting as the agent of the copyright holder. If either is really the case, then this photo can't really be upload to Commons without Getty's or the original copyright older's COM:CONSENT (which honestly would be near impossible to obtain given that Getty makes money off the photo). Getty has, however, in the past tried to claim copyright ownership of digitalized versions of older photos that are now considered to be within the public domain, and Commons seems to ignore such claims as en:copyfraud as long as it can be shown that the original photo is indeed within the public domain since digitalization isn't typically considered to be sufficiently creative enough to establish a new copyright under the copyright laws of many countries. So, if you can find this photo some where online or in a print publication where it's clearly being attributed to someone other than Getty, then that might help narrow things down a bit.-- Marchjuly (talk) 11:55, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RuthAMdJ: Commons already has this photo at File:Освобожденных оставшихся в живых узников концлагеря Освенцим выводят из лагеря.jpeg. The attribution of the file has varied. It is currently attributed to Olga Ignatovich (1905-1984). The file was kept as part of a multiple deletion request in 2020, but that was before it was attributed. Two other works by Olga Ignatovich were deleted, to be restored in 2059. So, the status of the file on Commons may be uncertain. But it is currently used in some Wikipedia articles. Uploading image of film poster already available online[edit]

I would like to upload an image of the poster for Bill Plympton's 2016 film Revengeance; the poster image is already available on IMDb -- as are various details relating to the film itself, some of which are not present on the current Wikipedia page. Are we talking about the image of a sailboat at https://www.portsmouthindependents.co.uk/ or something else? Do we know the history of that image? UK threshold of originality is very low, so unless the image (not this particular use of it) is very old (e.g. 120 years, though it could be different if it's attributable to a particular person) it will be copyrighted.
If your only concern here is to use it in the English-language Wikipedia, you can leave Commons out of the picture and upload it to Wikipedia as a non-free logo (which Commons does not accept). See en:File:Seattlestarlogo.png for a good example of how to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 16:45, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you:) I'll upload it as a non-free logo. I can't find any history of the image before it's use as the logo so it probably is copyrighted. B1ack H0l3 (talk) 17:26, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading derivatives[edit]

Hello! Is there a shortcut for uploading derivatives of an existing file on Commons? For example, if I crop an image from Commons and reupload it, I have to go through the entire upload process from scratch. This includes inputting the license, the author, etc. Is there a gadget/extension/other feature for me to easily port this kind of information from the original file? Given that there exists an "Upload a new version of this file" link, I can imagine a similar feature that says something like "upload a derivative of this file". Thanks! —Kittycataclysm (talk) 17:09, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kittycataclysm: for crops I'd recommend Commons:CropTool, for other types of derivative works (major adjustments you want to upload as a new file), you can use Commons:derivativeFX. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 17:29, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rules on replacing files with new versions and other options for yearly updated statistics[edit]

Hi all

I'm currently doing a project with a UN agency who produce new versions of graphics ever year and want to find an easy and simple way to keep the graphics updated not only on Commons but also on other Wikimedia wikis. I can see a few options, however I don't know what the rules are around it.

1. Is it allowed to simply update the existing files on Commons to the latest version? That way it would automatically add the latest version of the file to each Wikipedia article. 2. If it would break the rules/not be preferable to overwrite the files with a newer version are there any bots which can link the two files in some way and automatically swap out the older versions with the newer versions across Wikimedia wikis, or some other automated tools to make it not a manual process?

Thanks very much

John Cummings (talk) 12:43, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

COM:OW - It'd be best to just upload new files and keep the old ones intact. A diehard editor (talk) 12:49, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@John Cummings: Additionally, you can have a file with a distinct name marked with {{Current}}, which can be updated, and should be used wherever such quasi-automatic updates will be desired. - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jmabel and A diehard editor, one piece of information I missed from my original question is that I'm talking about 10,000s of files (6 graphics per country, in 6 languages and multiple topics). A few follow up questions
Has anyone done anything like this before?
"It'd be best to just upload new files and keep the old ones intact", is this process written down somewhere? Is there an best practice for linking them, showing one is depreciated, automatically updating the Wikipedia
Thanks again
John Cummings (talk) 10:42, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@John Cummings: if you want Wikipedia automatically updated on the new uploads, definitely use the approach with {{Current}}, use those in Wikipedia, and overwrite those annually. However, unless the data is something like a graph over time, where the new one simply adds information instead of changing information, we'd want all of the old ones as well. So you'd want FOO.ext (marked {{Current}}) as well as FOO (2023).ext, FOO (2024).ext, etc. And we'd be very glad to have older versions as well.
As for linking, a lot of that may simply be a matter of creating appropriate categories (so the information over time would group naturally by being in a category), but you can also use the "other versions" portion of {{Information}} or a similar template. Sometimes it's simpler to do a template for that "other versions" portion: if you have a big series that gets one added each year, it is easier to modify a template each year than to modify every file page. If you are systematic enough about your naming scheme, a single parameterized template should do the job for all the different things that are tracked over time. - Jmabel ! talk 15:10, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Advice on how to handle better rescan of an analog negative[edit]

Shot in Prague during the Velvet Revolution in 1989 on Iflord HP5 135 stock

First to note that I checked with Commons:Overwriting existing files and then searched these archives for clues but to no avail.

I recently uploaded a badly scanned negative (depicted on left). That scan, by a professional lab in Berlin as it happens, cut off the person on the left (as I later discovered). I am now having that same negative rescanned by a fine arts lab at higher resolution and manually cleaned (and also at considerably more expense).

So my question: (1) should I just upload that revised image under the same name, (2) ditto and also request the original scan be deleted (or hidden), or (3) use a new file name and request that the bad scan be deleted (or hidden)?

To also add that I think the image is historically significant and that it will be the first of about 40 images I will upload to Wikimedia shot just prior to and just after the fall of communism in East Germany and Czechoslovakia. Also taken using 35mm Nikon gear with a mix of professional and high‑street negative processing, so generally of high quality.

PS: I also offered the negatives to the German and Czech state archives but neither replied. In any case, I prefer to support Wikimedia.

PPS: if anyone wants to help with interpretation, I would be delighted to make contact!

Thanks in advance, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 17:02, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In this case, since you are the photographer and uploader, it is clearly a friendly edit. Since it's the same photo, you can overwrite. I wouldn't bother asking for the earlier version to be deleted unless you have some specific reason to suppress it. It doesn't save any memory, and it may make it harder for any non-admin who might have some reason to want to understand just what you did in terms of upload history. (Plenty of people who don't have "admin" status nonetheless do a lot of tasks that might normally be thought of as administrative.) - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RobbieIanMorrison: I agree with what Jmabel wrote above. If you are happy that the filename is the best filename for this photo, overwriting with the better image is the best solution in this case, because there's no reason that someone would prefer the image of lesser quality. I would only add that scanners of sufficient quality can do a very good job of scanning 35 mm negatives. So you might have a better control on the result by scanning yourself instead of paying labs for an uncertain result. (It's harder to find negative scanners for large negatives from the 1940s. I'm looking for one to scan negatives I inherited.) Ilford HP5 was what I often used in the 1980s. Given the grain, I am curious to see if the arts lab can really do a higher resolution. Unless they fill the image artificially, which I hope they don't. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:45, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: @Asclepias: Thanks for the very complete answers. In some weeks there will be two scans to compare! I did question the second lab about the relationship between graininess and resolution and was told that finely pixelated grain can look good on giant prints — make what you will of that! When I upload the second scan, I'll also note the scanning parameters and files sizes for both. This negative scanning is new territory for me — even though I worked extensively with 135 and 120 (6 × 7cm) formats. Tx again. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 19:59, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I came across File:הבחירה הדמוקרטית.png (the logo of an Israeli political party), which has been uploaded using the false rationale of it being in the public domain due to be published before 1929. However, I was wondering if would fall below the "threshold of originality" and be eligible to be on commons? If not, please delete it. Cheers, Number 57 (talk) 22:50, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Number 57 The current license does certainly seem incorrect. However, whether the logo itself can be kept as {{PD-logo}} depends on COM:TOO US and COM:TOO Israel (assuming Israel is the country of first publication). The only copyrightable element in the logo is (at least in my opinion) the flower. Perhaps the fower isn't complex enough to be eligible for protection under US copyright law, but it would certainly be eligible for such protection per COM:TOO UK. Since Israel's TOO seems to have followed the UK's up to 1989 before moving more towards the US thereafter, this could be what decides things with respect to Commons. Given that the file is only being used in the English Wikipedia article en:Democratic Choice (Israel), it could be re-uploaded locally to English Wikipedia and licensed as en:Template:PD-ineligible-USonly if it's PD in the US but not Israel; it could also be re-uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content if it isn't PD in both the US and Israel. Finally, for reference, the same file seems to be treated as non-free by Hebrew Wikipedia . This, of course, could just be someone being overly cautious and playing it safe, but it could also mean some did some digging and decided it wasn't PD in Israel. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Have I accurately attributed these images?[edit]

Hi there, I inadvertantly uploaded these images incorrectly to Wikimedia during the process of creating articles about these people (I'm new here, and learning), which is why the images were nominated for deletion. I think I have fixed the problem/s, but I'd be grateful if someone could take a look at them to see if I've attributed them properly:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MarekKowalkiewicz.jpg#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nicole_Sahin.png#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D

For context, the images were taken by a professional photographer on their behalf, and they have been granted permission to share them on Wikimedia by the photographer. The image were then forward to me to upload. I'd be grateful if someone could let me know if I'm doing things the right/wrong way. Cheers, and thank you. KWriteReturn (talk) 03:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@KWriteReturn:
  1. You still have them marked as "own work", but you've now listed someone else as the photographer. That makes no sense.
  2. "the images were taken by a professional photographer on their behalf": on whose behalf?
  3. Permission "to share them on Wikimedia" is, sad to say, useless, at least for Commons. Per COM:L, Commons accepts only files that are either in the public domain (these pretty clearly aren't) or where the copyright-holder has explicitly granted a "free license" such as a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license. Those aren't the only acceptable free licenses, but the license must allow for commercial use (which may, however, be limited by personality rights, trademark, or other non-copyright restrictions) and for the creation of derivative works.
On last, this permission "to share them on Wikimedia" falls short on two counts. (1) There is no explicit license allowing commercial use and derivative works and (2) we have only your word for someone else granting a license.
Other than the "own work" issue (which you can correct by accurately stating the source), the rest of this can be addressed by either of the following two approaches:
  1. Presuming the photographer is the copyright-holder, they can indicate the grant of license on any public-facing web page clearly under their own control (e.g. a website for their photography business; a Flickr page or something similar -- if they have a Flickr account, Flickr is well set up to allow a declaration of any of several different CC licenses; a publicly visible social media post; etc.) Basically, they can post the image, indicate that they are the photographer, and grant the permission. Sometimes it is useful for this purpose to create a page on a website that might even have no incoming links on the website, but where they provide the URL, and the domain is clearly under their control.
  2. The copyright-holder can send an overt declaration of a particular license as explained at COM:VRT. If the copyright-holder is someone other than the photographer, the VRT will also typically need a copy of the document that transferred copyright.
I know this is a little complicated, but publishing a third party's work legally is inherently complicated. - Jmabel ! talk 05:29, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

War memorial to Long Range Desert Group contact the photographer Graham Bould[edit]

I am trying to track down photographer Graham Bould who was the photographer of the War Memorial to the LRDG War Memorial at the Papakura Military Camp in New Zealand. The memorial that we were shown at the camp recently was not the one that Graham Bould had photographed but a new polished granite one. I am trying to track down the original but have not been able to find out where it has gone. It was in existence in 2023 according to the Waiouru Army Museum but is not able to be located now. It would be helpful for me to know where the original memorial was located at the camp as the new one may be in the position of the old one. 2405:DA40:1184:D000:A193:B00:6927:14E2 05:06, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You could try re-asking this question at the en:Wikipedia:Reference desk since perhaps someone there might be able to help you. You could also simply try Googling "Graham Bould" or the name of the memorial and see what turns up. It's possible someone here might just happen to know the answer to your questions, but I wouldn't count to much on that happening because it's really outside the scope of this help desk. I will add that a user named GrahamBould did upload File:LRDG Memorial at Papakura New Zealand.jpg back in 2006, but that account hasn't been used since 2014. I don't understand on what basis cc-by-sa-4.0 is the copyright tag. If that is wrong, the the image should get deleted.

Amtrak New Photos[edit]

Hi, I would like assistance with figuring out the steps for how to upload photos of the new Amtrak Borealis service which were posted to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation twitter account yesterday (https://x.com/WisconsinDOT/status/1793291366715256945, https://x.com/WisconsinDOT/status/1792997039879397836)

I am only aware of the relevant Amtrak categories and not the particulars of licensing, sorry. Claire 26 (talk) 14:55, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Contact the Wisconsin DOT, and ask them to either contact COM:VRT to grant a free license or to state the photographs are licensed under Creative Commons-Attribution 4.0 or Creative Commons-Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 on a site that they control. Abzeronow (talk) 16:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Simple English Wiki to Regular Wiki[edit]

How do you request or have a page/profile moved from Simple English to Regular Wikipedia? Marievalles (talk) 14:57, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Marievalles: Hi, and welcome. You can copy/paste with attribution, or ask a Simple English Wikipedia Admin to export it with all history. FYI, we don't have profiles here on Commons.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:03, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Jeff. Marievalles (talk) 17:37, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Border issues on thumbnails[edit]

Hey. Could someone more knowledgeable with Commons look into this? Thanks in advance. Tietosanaton (talk) 17:52, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tietosanaton: I have tried my usual tricks, but I can't get those borders to budge.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:48, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: Thanks for trying nevertheless, I appreciate it. Tietosanaton (talk) 17:38, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to add subtitles to a video on Wikipedia.[edit]

I have accurate subtitles I'm trying to add to a video if anyone can give me an example or a template that would be very helpful. 67.230.43.126 20:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Click on the "TimedText" tab on the video description page, select the language of the subtitles and enter the subtitles in SRT format. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 10:32, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading a photo that is a photo of a picture taken in 1889[edit]

I have a photo that I took with my cell phone of Winchester Stewart Oliphant when he was in the Washington State Legislature in 1889. The original photo is among his papers that are kept at the ranch house where he homesteaded in Garfield County, WA. I would like to be able to upload this photo to the Wikipedia entry on "WS Oliphant" which I have expanded. Elinor Graham (talk) 20:43, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Elinor Graham: This should be OK with {{PD-old-assumed-expired}}. Yann (talk) 09:44, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why won't it make me upload an article?[edit]

Why won't it make me upload an article? Ilgeniodellamusica 11 (talk) 06:21, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ilgeniodellamusica 11: Because you are on the wrong project. Wikimedia Commons is for multimedia content. Articles should be on Wikipedia. And articles are not "uploaded". Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:43, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please delete 2023-09-24 01 CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg[edit]

I originally uploaded 2023-09-24 01 CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg but for reasons I do not know, image resolution was lower and most of the metadata and GPS coordinates did not up upload with the image as normal. I tried to upload a new version of the same file but Commons would not let me do this. I was able to upload the same file with a slightly altered file name. Please delete 2023-09-24 01 CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg and keep 2023-09-24 01a CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg. They are the same image and having both is redundant and adds confusion. GRDN711 (talk) 12:51, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GRDN711: At the top of File:2023-09-24 01 CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg, you can insert this template:
{{Duplicate|File:2023-09-24 01a CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg}}.

Template:Nav-SE[edit]

Regards. Question and request. Why does the text Template:Nav-SE appear on the category page Category:Spoons from Sweden after inserting the template: Template:LocationSweden? Can I ask someone competent to fix this inconvenience? Abraham OFM (talk) 17:20, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Abraham: Hi, It's because there's no Template:Nav-SE. This is also the case with other Location templates created by the same user. You can either remove it from the code of Template:LocationSweden, or you can comment it out in the code, or you can create a template of that name or of another name, as you did when you created Template:Nav-PL, if there's not already an equivalent template in Category:Templates related to Sweden. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:07, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hungary · United Kingdom - Templates[edit]

There are Template:Location Germany and Template:Location Poland. Are there similar templates for the UK and Hungary? Thank you very much for your answer. Abraham OFM (talk) 17:27, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Abraham: Given that the two examples you give are red links, I believe you meant {{LocationGermany}} and {{LocationPoland}}. I don't offhand see anything at all similar for Hungary. The only thing I see at all like this for [part of] the UK is {{Location map UK England}}. - Jmabel ! talk 21:26, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do I delete a photo of myself?[edit]

How do I remove a photo of myself? Tbkowalski (talk) 18:05, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tbkowalski: If you are asking how to remove it from Wikimedia Commons, you can nominate it for deletion (you can use the link "Nominate for deletion" from the file description page) and indicate a reason. The photo may be deleted if it's not in use, if you're not a notable person or for some other good reason. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:15, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
